Wednesday Banker

The Banker Treble – Wednesday’s Football

Michael Weightman picks out three teams who are certain to win on Wednesday night and could treble your money if you back them.

The Banker Treble – Wednesday’s Football
Latest oddsChelsea to beat Fulham2/5
With more Carling Cup fixtures taking place tonight and a full round of Serie A (and La Liga) fixtures to choose from, I’m backing Chelsea, Napoli and Juventus to come out victorious.
Punters who open a bwin account and place their free £25 bet on this treble could pocket a cool £98 if all three teams win – and here are the reasons why they will.
Chelsea to beat Fulham @ 2/5 (add to betslip by clicking here)
Chelsea will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season at Man Utd and have the perfect opportunity to do so against west London neighbours Fulham.
Jose Mourinho’s first trophy in England was the Carling Cup and fellow countryman Andre Villas-Boas will no doubt be hoping to follow in the Special One’s footsteps.
Fulham have not beaten their rivals since 1979 and have only won nine times in 73 attempts. They have also lost their last five League Cup ties against Premier League opposition.
Chelsea will be desperate to get back on track, and even though there are likely to be changes, expect Martin Jol’s side to leave Stamford Bridge empty-handed.
Napoli to beat Chievo @ evens (add to betslip by clicking here)
Napoli go into this one sitting top of Serie A with two wins in their first two games of the season. A solid opening-day win away at Cesena was followed by an impressive 3-1 home victory against AC Milan.
The league’s top scorer, Edison Cavani, bagged all three in that match and also hit the opener in the Champions League tie at Man City.
A draw with newly-promoted Novara is all Chievo have to show for their season so far and even though they did the double over the their opponents last season, expect the boys from Naples to continue their good form tonight.
Juventus to beat Bologna @ 2/5 (add to betslip by clicking here)
Juventus manager Antonio Conte said this week he was delighted with his side’s start to the season and the Old Lady are strong favourites to remain unbeaten.
A win in Siena and a 4-1 thumping of Parma sees Juve trailing leaders Napoli only on goal difference and with no European football at the Stadio delle Alpi this season, all efforts are geared towards league glory.
A pre-season points deduction for Atalanta is the only thing saving Bologna from bottom spot and the Rossoblu are yet to score this campaign. No wins in two so far will almost certainly become none in three.

Why Tony Pulis should be manager of the year

Why Tony Pulis should be manager of the year

Football

As the fat lady sits in her dressing room, warming up the voice for the final chorus of the 2010-2011 Premier League campaign - the footballing world have already decided on their leading duet.
Gareth Bale & Scott Parker became the title-holders of the PFA and Football Writer’s awards with more accolade due to follow in the coming weeks as leagues and cups are finally decided.
Although the players have voted on their fellow professionals and the journalists have had their say, the Manager of the Year award is yet to be decided.
In a season with no outstanding candidate, much like the player awards in which it’s been claimed Scott Parker won by two votes, it could well be a very close call.
It’s been a season of the unexpected and because of this there would be no better time to recognise the wonderful work of Tony Pulis.
The Other Guys
However as Manchester United approach their record 19th league title it would take a brave man to bet against Sir Alex Ferguson picking up this award for the ninth time and what would be the fourth time in the last five years. Yet is Fergie truly deserving this year? Or is it more a case of United profiting from other’s inconsistencies.
Prior to the Birmingham and Barcelona games Arsene Wenger could well of been the victor and if it was voted at the end of November, Ancelotti would have scooped the prize. Were it to be awarded on entertainment value then Holloway would win hands down and Alex McLeish should be a strong contender after guiding Birmingham to Carling Cup success.
Nevertheless, if Pulis were to win the FA Cup it would eclipse all other achievements and even if Manchester City did pinch it ahead of them, the job he’s done is nothing short of miraculous.
Mick McCarthy threw his weight behind Pulis this week saying:
“You get to vote for three of them [Manager of the Year] and Tony has got a vote of mine."
"It was a great semi-final victory, but just the job he has done - he has improved the club year-in year- out and they've got better as a team.
"They get much maligned, but never from me because there is more than one way to win a game of football and what he does is get the best out of people,"
Style of Play
Unfortunately for the Stoke gaffer the fact that the thought of praising himself and his footballing philosophy is allegedly blaspheming against the beautiful game often means that he is overlooked. This altered perception, created by Mr Wenger’s Arsenal, would have us believe that there’s only one way of playing football.
This way, which Wenger has been nurturing for the last six years, has proved fruitless so far despite some wonderfully talented footballers to have donned the red jersey.
And forgetting the skill, the flair and intricacies infused through the philosophy, the one thing missing from the theory and ultimately the biggest flaw in Wegner’s side is backbone; something which undeniably the Potters have in abundance.
Arsenal would love the backbone and fighting spirit of Stoke and could do a lot worse than having Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcorss in their side. And this is not an attack on the Gunners but when you recall the games against Newcastle away, Liverpool at home and both derbies against Spurs - you see what difference that grit and determination could have made.
The Barcelona-esque football that the world’s clubs are all apparently trying to emulate is the exact reason the antidote has been employed at Real Madrid; to win trophies and stifle the undoubted creativity of the Catalan side by outmuscling and overpowering them.
Nobody argues with the way Mourinho goes about the things and so why not Pulis? Especially as he can not call on the likes of Ronaldo, Di Maria and Kaka.
Myth Busting
Furthermore in the style criticism, many claim that Rory Delap is the source of the majority of Stoke’s goals this season. However Kenwyne Jones’ header at the weekend was only the third goal this campaign that the Delap throw in has assisted in.
The Potters have also only scored two less goals than Tottenham on their home turf and as many as Bolton away from the Britannia. And staying with Owen Coyle’s men; Stoke’s 5-0 demolition of them in the FA Cup Semi Final was the biggest ever winning margin in an FA Cup tie as Pulis guided the club to their first ever FA Cup final. It’s often easy to forget in football but it was that long ago that Pulis was saving the club from relegation to the third tier of English Football.
Player Rejuvenation
There are a few players plying their trade at the Britannia that are indebted to Pulis for resurrecting and kick starting their careers. Matthew Etherington had practically been written off after spells at Tottenham and West Ham - yet Pulis has reinvigorated him, and his wonder goal at White Hart Lane is evidence of that. Kenwyne Jones and Robert Huth had both gone stale in the North East and yet Jones now looks back to his best and the German defender has been transformed into to one of the most prolific centre halves in the league. However the biggest success story of the current campaign has to be Jonathon Walters. The former Ipswich forward arrived in fairly modest fashion but his consistent performances reached a pinnacle with two fine strikes at Wembley and it backs up McCarthy’s belief that he knows how to get the best out of all his players.
Decisions Decisions
It does seem that it all hinges on the result on May 14th at Wembley; if Stoke beat the City millions then the Welshman should be a shoe in for the title. It may prove a lot trickier if it’s a reverse result in the final but either way his capped head can leave held high.
There’s no stand out candidate in the list, and yet regardless of that he still merits his potential nomination. Much like the fat lady at the opera, he may not be to everyone’s taste but looking past personal preferences - both are giving great performances and hitting all the right notes.

Blackpool v Ipswich Betting Odds

Bet on Blackpool to edge high-scoring thriller

The Seasiders should have enough to get past Ipswich, but expect plenty of goals at Bloomfield Road.

Bet on Blackpool to edge high-scoring thriller
Latest oddsOver 3.5 goals in the match33/20
Blackpool welcome Paul Jewell’s Ipswich to Bloomfield Road on Saturday with Ian Holloway’s men firm favourites at 4/5 despite being without a win in their last three.
However, only in-form Derby have toppled the Tangerines this season and a win in this one would keep the home side in touch with the play-off places.
It was an assorted August for the Tractor Boys with two wins and three defeats in the league and odds of 33/10 reflect their unpredictability.
A draw would be Blackpool’s third in a row and can be backed at 12/5.
The aforementioned defeat to Derby is the only time ‘Pool have failed to score this campaign and with four goals to his name, the Seasiders also boast the league’s joint top goalscorer in Kevin Phillips.
Furthermore, Ipswich have the worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 14 times in five matches, meaning they have let in an average of 2.8 per game.
But with the likes of Michael Chopra and Keith Andrews, who have five league strikes between them, also in their squad, goals are expected. Over 3.5 in 90 mins at 33/20 could be worth a flutter, as could over 2.5 in the first half at 9/2.
Last time Ipswich ventured outside Suffolk they were thumped 7-1 at Peterborough and in a game that does promise goals, a small wager on several scorelines could be the way forward.
New customers receive a free £25 bet for joining bwin.com and placing this on a 4-2 home victory would give a tasty return of £410 if Holloway men’s pull off this particular result.
A Jason Euell strike in Blackpool’s 2009-10 promotion-winning season was enough when the sides last met, but this was their first win against the East Anglicans for 30 years and their only success in seven attempts.
If they want to keep up this record, it’s likely Ipswich are going to have to score at least twice to win; something they did manage in their previous game after coming from behind to beat Leeds with two second-half goals.
Therefore, betting on Blackpool to be winning at the interval but Ipswich to be winning at the full-time could also be a decent long shot at odds of 30/1.
Why not see just how good a punt it will prove to be by opening a bwin account, sticking your free £25 bet on this outcome and potentially being £775 better off before X Factor even starts!

Newcastle v Fulham preview

Newcastle v Fulham preview

FulhamFulham make their longest journey of the season a day later than planned, as respective cup commitments forced this one to be moved to the Sunday.
The Toon will know their Carling Cup third round opponents before they kick a ball, but the 120 minutes of action from Thursday’s second round game may well have an effect on a few legs.
Even though the visitors also progressed through to the next round of their respective competition, a 1-0 defeat on the night and the journey back from the Ukraine could well leave a few feeling jaded.
It’s still early days in the 2011-2012 campaign, but with the unbeaten record still intact it’s looking a lot brighter than many expected.
Team news
Joey Barton decided QPR was the place for him and with it he left our squad that little bit thinner. If Pardew keeps the same system used at Sunderland, it would also leave a midfield place open. Gosling would seem like the obvious choice but looks understandably off the pace after so long out with injury. Vuckic did himself no harm with some nice touches and movement at Scunthorpe but would Pardew opt for one of his youngsters?
It’s more likely the boss will go 4-4-2 with Gutierrez, Obertan and Tiote all back in the starting line up. There still seems a spot up for grabs, depending on where Obertan plays, either on the wing or up front. Shola is a guaranteed, but with Demba Ba also looking off-colour, could this be the game to field our two Ameobis? Marveaux also did himself no harm and don’t be surprised to see the Frenchman get the nod with Obertan occupying a more advanced role. The back 5 picks itself, with top scorer Ryan Taylor likely to continue as our make shift left-back.
Guess who’s back
Martin Jol oversees a game at for the first time since Dec 2006 at a ground where he is yet to register a win. Two league defeats and an FA cup exit are all the big Dutchman has to show for his trips to the north east and he will be no doubt keen to rectify that record. Old boys Duff and Hughes are likely starters, with the latter widely expected to receive the better reception. The Cottagers involvement in the Intertoto cup makes Sunday’s clash their 10 competitive game of the season, and despite progressing in Europe they have yet to win or score in their opening two Premier League games. Martin Jol has been linked with another move for Cameron Jerome to add some much needed firepower to their side and with the Magpies yet to concede in the league, the likes of Dembele and Zamora may have another troublesome afternoon.
History
For some unknown reason, the men from south west London have proved somewhat of a bogey team for Newcastle, especially on Tyneside. In the last 6 meetings at St James’, the home side have only secured three points on one occasion- when goals from Mark Viduka and Michael Owen gave Kevin Keegan his first victory since his return midway through the 07/08 season.  All tolled the Magpies have only beaten the visitors 3 times at home in the Premier League and who can forget the ill-fated meeting in the Souness era when he was sent to the stands and watched his side be thumped 4-1.
Last season the teams played out a drab 0-0 and if either side gets a cross in the box it will have surpassed the action from that encounter.
Hello  Old  Friend
Kevin Friend will take charge of the lunchtime affair as he personally enters his fourth season as a top flight official. Friend last officiated at St James’ in the Toon’s 5-1 demolition of Cardiff en route to the Championship title. However he will probably be best remembered for allowing Shola Ameobi’s opener in the 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough to stand, despite the big forward fouling both Emmanuel Pogatetz and Brad Jones before sticking it in the net. Don’t worry though Kevin, 52,000 others didn’t see either of them and they’ll all be hoping you once again oversee a home victory.
Possible Nufc Line-Up
Krul, Simpson, S.Taylor, Coloccini(C), R.Taylor, Gutierrez, Tiote, Cabaye, Marveaux, Obertan, Ameobi
Thought for the day
This is the last game before the transfer window shuts- so it may well be the final  time we see the side without a recognised left back or goal scorer- don’t count on it though.
